Automatic or Intentional Writing?

13 May 2025

Automatic writing, as it’s generally called, is a form of channeling. With automatic writing, we put pen to paper and we wait for some form of writing to come through our poised hand and onto the page.

While, in theory, this is an excellent start to channeled writing, it raises an important question: What is writing through us?

“Automatic or Intentional Writing?” is an original blog post by Ellen M. Gregg, published on 13 May 2025 on ellenmgregg.com. #automaticwriting #intentionalwriting #channeling #channeledwriting

What’s writing through us?

Ideally, it’s our guides, an angel or ascended master, perhaps even a healthy in-spirit loved one. However, if we aren’t clear about who we want to channel through us when we prepare to write in this way, we leave a massive door open.

In that instance, anything could step through, including some highly undesirable entities. This could prove problematic, all on its own. And yet, consider what happens if that’s the case and we don’t realize it, and what we’re channeling is guidance that’s most definitely not for us, even though it appears to be.

Perhaps we can agree that’s an even bigger problem.

This is where the intentional part comes in.

Before we sit down for our channeled writing practice, we’ll do ourselves a great favor if we already have an intention for who or what we wish to channel. Whether it’s our guides, Mother Mary, archangel Sandalphon, a beloved grandparent, the ocean, a whale, a mouse, or a dragon, we’ll wish to set that intention first.

That intention then becomes a boundary for our protection. This is an essential step in our process, even with our regular daily boundaries and shielding in place.

And it’s no problem if we want to switch gears within a channeled writing session and go from channeling Sandalphon to channeling a humpback whale. We simply thank Sandalphon for their time, and then create a new intention to channel the whale. There’s no need to overcomplicate it (as much as our human ego may like to do so, bless us).

An intentional writing practice may lead to other forms of channeling.

This isn’t a warning. It’s a by-the-way with an implied smiley face. When we practice any form of spiritual activity, including using our intuitive senses, pendulums, Tarot and oracle cards, energy healing, and so on, there will likely be a side effect. That side effect is the blossoming of other forms of spiritual abilities that are either new to us or have yet to reveal their full strength.

It’s an awesome side effect, in my humble opinion. Maybe you’ll agree and be more intentional with your practices, whatever they may be.

On that note, I feel it’s important to emphasize the benefits of consistency in all of this. By committing to nurture your spiritual practices daily, you will discover how quickly the path you’ve chosen will begin to take shape and reveal itself more fully to you.
