Sleep, Meditation, and Spirit: Wholeness Monday

Wholeness MondayInspiration to support your body, mind and spirit: your whole.

Body

The lovely Kris Carr offered up How to Sleep Better: 10 tips for healthy & restorative sleep. Some may seem obvious, some may be surprising, and there's one that could definitely push some buttons:

Turn off tech at least one hour before going to bed.

That means TV, tablets, smart phones, laptops, etc. While Kris doesn't go into the "why" around that tip in her post, the reasoning behind it has to do with the lighting from those technological wonders. The bright backlights used to illuminate the displays work against you in terms of allowing your body's natural rhythm and functions to help you settle down for a good sleep. In effect, they can trick your body into thinking it's still daytime, and prevent those natural responses from kicking in.It's something to think about, for sure.

Mind

Tom Cronin, via Mind Body Green, listed 40 Darn Good Reasons Why Everyone Should Meditate. They're all great reasons, and their sum supports our whole; no doubt about it. Those that support our mental-emotional health might be eye-opening. Here are a few from the list to whet your mindful whistle:

  • "Reduces anxiety"
  • "Helps heal depression"
  • "Reduces phobias and fears"
  • "Improves your memory"
  • "Promotes inner peace"

It can also increase your intuition. I don't think it's possible to disagree with the fact that meditation does a whole lot of good.

Spirit

I came across a beautiful, new-to-me quote from Marianne Williamson on Pinterest over the weekend. It's "one of those" that elicits a nod of agreement and an "Oh, yeah," followed by a deep, slow breath to take it in as far as possible. Check it out:"Ego says, 'Once everything falls into place, I'll feel peace.' Spirit says, 'Find your peace, and then everything will fall into place.'" ~Marianne WilliamsonSee what I mean? Perhaps that could be your mission this week, should you choose to accept it. Perhaps you could find your peace (if you haven't already), and observe everything fall into place. It's possible you might find your peace in meditation, and it just might help you sleep better. ;-)

What's Your Take?

'Fess up: Are you a pre-bed technology user? Does your smartphone even go to bed with you? Do you think you could commit to putting it down an hour before bedtime for a few days as an experiment?P.S. I'm hosting a Happy Hour conference call on Thursday, February 19 at 4:30pm. Learn more here.
