December 21, 2012 and Beyond

Before you get caught up in all the memes, please note the "and Beyond" in the title. Deep breath.As we draw closer to the end of this eventful year, I'm hearing more and more about the end-of-the-world/apocalypse/end-times meme associated with the last (known) Mayan calendar.The fear-based thinking that birthed the meme is fueled by changes in the weather, worldwide turmoil, precarious financial markets, and raging politics, among other things.

It Isn't the End of the World

Personally, I choose not to subscribe to any of the doomsayers.

  • I don't believe 12/21/2012, is going to bring an army of avenging warrior angels, with all their fire and brimstone, down upon our heads.

  • I'm highly suspect of those proclaiming that anyone who doesn't adhere to a certain religious viewpoint will find themselves left behind while others are taken to Heaven, because my spiritual beliefs are in stark contrast to those proclamations.

  • Nibiru is not going to obliterate Earth.

  • Zombies (spoiler alert!) don't exist anywhere except in our fertile imaginations.

In fact, NASA recently stated, with absolute certainty, that there will not be a planetary apocalypse. Before that, back in June, the CDC issued a statement refuting the threat of a zombie apocalypse.The fear-based theories and dire warnings are hogwash, in my opinion, but it sure makes for dramatic movies, books, and newscasts. It makes for drama, in general.The thing is, Armageddon, or an apocalypse, have nothing to do with what's really going on. What I believe, based on what I continue to witness, is a major shift in consciousness is reaching a tipping point to coincide with the 2012 Winter Solstice.

Less of the Stuff-For-Me Sensibility

I see people growing tired of self-imposed and societal expectations that focus on:

  • filling too-big homes with too many things, necessitating storage lockers for the excess;

  • overspending to a point of maxing out credit card after credit card after credit card;

  • proving their worth by virtue of what they own rather than who they are.

The documentary "I Am", by Hollywood director Tom Shadyac, highlights the dead end - the actual, singular human end times - that is living beyond one's means, based on the things one possesses, and as though nothing one does affects anyone else.The film goes on to explore what people really want; what they really require to live. The answers to the questions posed have nothing to do with money or things.

More of the Self-Care-for-All Sensibility

Conversely, I've seen more people seeking methods of spiritual self-care that encourage the concept of oneness, including practices like:

  • Meditation, in order to find a still center from which to draw peace;

  • Reiki or Healing Touch, etc., in order to provide themselves and loved ones with deep healing both within and without;

  • Yoga, in order to strengthen the body while stilling the mind chatter.

It's no coincidence that many traditional churches are experiencing diminished congregations as former parishioners look for a spiritual alternative that doesn't put an omnipotent being at its helm. The old dogma are falling by the wayside.

It's the End of the World As We Know It

It feels more and more like December 21, 2012 - 12/21/12, the Winter Solstice, and the point after which we begin a return to the light - marks the end of the world as we know it, if we choose to grasp it, become one with it, and live it.It's an opportunity, and a sweet one, at that. It's another marker of the massive awakening occurring on our planet that will, I firmly believe, change our Earth experience for the better, for everyone and everything.Some of what's changing will be uncomfortable. Growing pains usually are. And yet growing pains are the labor pains of growth, and we absolutely, positively need to grow as a collective and a planet.Are you preparing for an apocalypse, or an opportunity?
