Nine of Wands
My self-study of Tarot continues with the Nine of Wands. Or, as I just heard, “one who misses out.”
Shifty, uncertain, incomplete, lack, separate. Unable or unwilling to commune or integrate. Feeling left out and yet needing to own that feeling as a self-manifestation. Past hurts creating present reality.
Wands, sprigs (leaves), bandage, mountains, boots.
The boots! This image, for me, is all about the boots which, I hear, “are made for walking.” Obvious, right? And yet the figure in this image feels to be at a standstill – by choice.
Brown, burnt orange, green, blue, white, gray.
It’s the burnt orange of the figure’s tunic standing out like a beacon… and a warning. I’m associating the orange with the sacral chakra, which holds associating with personal passion and creativity, in addition to non-ancestral relationships and sexuality. The thing is, the wonderfulness of those associations are “lost in translation” to this person, who feels to be the antithesis of the potential at hand.
What the Guide Says
“The figure leans upon his staff and has an expectant look, as if awaiting an enemy. Behind him are eight other staves erect, in orderly disposition, like a palisade. Divinatory Meanings: The card signifies strength in opposition. If attacked, he will meet the onslaught boldly. With this main significance there are all its possible adjuncts, including delay, supervision, adjournment. Reversed: Obstacles, adversity, calamity..”
Um… Not so much, except, perhaps, “delay,” “adjournment,” “obstacles,” and “adversity” – all of which are “self-proclaimed,” as I just heard. I don’t see expectancy on the face of the figure. I see uncertainty, caution, fear, distrust. I feel shrinking and not owning one’s full potential.
What We Say
One consideration will represent a sullen person who considers life as thought against them.
One consideration will represent a person whose self-worth has extreme injury.
One consideration will represent a controlling nature.
One consideration will represent a forfeiture of cooperation or coordination.
One consideration will represent perceived barriers.
Consider a person who is positioned, through choices of actions and emotions, apart from others and also from life as a whole.
Consider a person who is incomplete only through not noticing what is in their own hands.
Overlooking the obvious. Missing the point. Self-defeating. Unnecessarily defensive. Prepared to attack; knee-jerk reactivity. Making assumptions.
I Might Ask This Client…
“What happened to instigate a me-against-the-world mentality?” … “What might you gain from embracing the passion you withhold from yourself and others?” … “Who would you be if you weren’t so fearful?”
What comes up for you around this card?
