Nine of Cups
My self-study of Tarot continues with the Nine of Cups. Or, as I just heard, “ducks in a row.”
Brightness; glory; abundance; fulfillment; pleasure; satisfaction; merit; risen above.
Cups, high table, happy and/or pleased figure, bench.
It’s the table that stands out for me. While it looks pretty with its blue cloth and all those golden chalices, there’s something a bit off. Why is the table so high? Why are the chalices practically out of reach? Who are they being kept from? Why is the figure acting almost as a guard? I hear, “The cheese stands alone.”
Gold, blue, red, gray, brown, off white.
It’s the red of the hat and stockings on the figure that act as a beacon for me. I keep hearing, feeling and seeing the root chakra, which makes complete sense given the obvious abundance present here.
What the Guide Says About the Nine of Cups
“The goodly personage is feasting to his heart’s content and abundant refreshment of wine is on the arched counter behind him.
“Divinatory Meanings: Concord, contentment, physical bien-être; also victory, success, advantage, satisfaction for the Querent or person for whom the consultation is made.
“Reversed: Truth, loyalty, liberty. But the readings vary and include mistakes, imperfections, etc.”
Feasting? I don’t see it. In fact, I more see and feel squirreling away, albeit in plain sight. I’m not feeling the “refreshment of wine,” either. Why would nine goblets of wine be placed on so high a table it’s meant to be consumed?
I want to accept this card at face value, for its sunny disposition, and yet there’s a caution here. All may be well, and yet it’s possible it’s only so for the person sitting before the chalices. “All is well” may be better served by remembering “all” means more than one; it’s inclusive.
Meaning of bien-être: Well-being.
Meaning of concord: Agreement or harmony between people or groups.
