Three of Swords: Taking On Tarot Self-Study

Three of Swords

My self-study of Tarot continues with the Three of Swords. Or, as I just heard, "ouch."Three of Swords: Taking On Tarot self-study of the Universal Waite Tarot deck, created by Stuart P. Kaplan, artwork by Pamela Colman Smith, recolored by Mary Hanson-Roberts, published by U.S. Games Systems, Inc.

First Impressions

Three of Swords: Taking On Tarot self-study of the Universal Waite Tarot deck, created by Stuart P. Kaplan, artwork by Pamela Colman Smith, recolored by Mary Hanson-Roberts, published by U.S. Games Systems, Inc.Wounded, hurt, cut to the quick, heartache, heart pain (physiological), stabbed in the heart, "engaging in a war of hearts."

Symbols

Heart, swords, clouds, rain. The rain is what strikes me in this image. It feels cold and harsh - almost like sleet - and then it feels warm and desperate. I taste the salt of tears formed of sadness and grief, or perhaps anger.

Colors

White, silver, blue, gray, red, black. It's the lackluster gray that pervades this image for me, which makes sense given the overall tone of the card. There's a dull quality to the gray; a dullness that can certainly be the result of an overage of heartache.

What the Guide Says About the Three of Swords

"Three swords piercing a heart, cloud and rain behind."Divinatory Meanings: Removal, absence, delay, division, rupture, dispersion, and all that the design signifies naturally. Reversed: Mental alienation, error, loss, distraction, disorder, confusion."Dispersion: the action or process of distributing things or people over a wide area.I'm so surprised that neither heartache nor grief were mentioned within the guide's description. Then again, it would be reasonable to assume that those qualities would fall within "all that the design signifies naturally," I suppose.Mental alienation is an interesting suggestion in the Reversed section.

What We Say About the Three of Swords

Overage of pain as it relates upon a human heart. The pain could associate with amoré or with human heart function, and could indicate relationship trauma or medical trauma.Consideration may be afforded to the perceived pain of grief, as through the ending of a relationship by choice or by design or by the ending of a human life.

Amoré... That's interesting. I smiled when it came through instead of "love."

Other Impressions

I hear the lyric, "Loneliness is such a sad affair. And I can hardly wait to be with you again."https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=SJmmaIGiGBgAn affair, aka infidelity, aka cheating. An impending loss of a relationship.A potential heart issue.Sadness, grief, despair, loneliness."Achy-Breaky Heart"https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=byQIPdHMpjc

 I Might Ask a Client...

"What or who has caused the pain in your heart?""How can you acknowledge and honor your sadness, and yet not permit it to harm you?"What comes up for you around this card?
