Ten of Swords: Taking On Tarot Self-Study

Ten of Swords

My self-study of Tarot continues with the Ten of Swords. Or, as I just heard, "defeated."10 of Swords: Taking On Tarot, a self-study of the Universal Waite Tarot deck created by Stuart P. Kaplan, drawings by Pamela Colman Smith, recolored by Mary Hanson-Roberts, published by U.S. Games Systems, Inc.

First Impressions

10 of Swords: Taking On Tarot, a self-study of the Universal Waite Tarot deck created by Stuart P. Kaplan, drawings by Pamela Colman Smith, recolored by Mary Hanson-Roberts, published by U.S. Games Systems, Inc.Death; "All the king's horses and all the king's men couldn't put Humpty together again."; game over; end game; "The Final Countdown".https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=9jK-NcRmVcw

Symbols

Swords, figure lying face down, blood, red cape, sunset, water, dirt, hills. It's the ominous black sky, which has no stars to redeem it, that takes over the image for me. It feels like the sunset will be the last - at least for this person. (I'm being shown a character death in "Stranger Things 2" as an example.)

Colors

Black, yellow, blue, red, orange, silver, gray, brown, white. The canary yellow slice of sky stands out in juxtaposition to the black sky in such a way that it almost feels like a slap in the face. It's like the Soup Nazi on Seinfeld, doling out bowls of steaming goodness to all except one person: "No soup for you."

What the Guide Says About the Ten of Swords

"A prostrate figure, pierced by all the swords belonging to the card."Divinatory Meanings: Whatsoever is intimated by the design - also pain, affliction, tears, sadness, desolation. Reversed: Advantage, profit, success, favor, but none of these are permanent. Also power and authority."The divinatory meanings - including the reversed meanings - make sense given the tone of the card. Interesting that death isn't offered up as a potential meaning, given the ominous amount of swords and their positions in the body (corpse?).

What We Say About the Ten of Swords

Transparent response to all of life accosting a person, all at once and without offering of any hope.Oppression, as by a society or an individual or a group, overcoming someone.Corruption of the soul by the ego overwhelming all light, as with Hitler and similar sociopaths.

Other Impressions

"Dirt nap."Downtrodden.Undergoing a complete breakdown. All defenses lost or given up.

 I Might Ask a Client...

"How might it be that you've become a pincushion for life's challenges?""What steps might you take to reclaim your power and perspective and the light that comes with them?"What comes up for you around this card?
