The Devil: Taking On Tarot
XV. The Devil
My self-study of Tarot continues with The Devil. Or, as I just heard, "the one who represents the ego structure."
Allegiance to ego; "the devil is in the details'; prisoner of one's thoughts, beliefs, career, relationships; giving in to the lowest good; choosing the low road over the high road; living by doing over being.
Upside down pentacle; fire; grapes (of wrath?); chains.
For all it isn't a symbol I listed, it's the devils' hand that claims my attention. It's posed in what popular culture calls the Vulcan salute, about which I learned a lot when I researched its intended meaning.
The bottom line: "Live long and prosper." And that isn't something one would necessarily associate with the devil...
...Unless you consider it from an ill-intentioned perspective. Consider how that phrase might sound to a prostitute from a pimp or any worker from any money-hungry boss.
Consider what impact that phrase and its intent could have on a spirit from an ego.
Brown, gray, black, yellow, red, purple, green, orange.
For all it's the background, it's black that prevails. Which makes sense, given the context. It feels empty in a dark way; an uncomfortable way. It feels like it sucks out the light.
What the Guide Says
"Ravage, violence, force, vehemence, extraordinary efforts, fatality, that which is predestined but not for this reason evil. Reversed: Evil fatality, weakness, pettiness, blindness."
