Nine of Pentacles: Taking On Tarot

Nine of Pentacles: Taking On Tarot

Nine of Pentacles

My self-study of Tarot continues with the Nine of Pentacles. Or, as I just heard, "Bounty."Nine of Pentacles: Taking On Tarot, a self-study of the Universal Waite Tarot deck created by Stuart P. Kaplan, drawings by Pamela Colman Smith, recolored by Mary Hanson-Roberts, published by U.S. Games Systems, Inc.

First Impressions

Nine of Pentacles: Taking On Tarot, a self-study of the Universal Waite Tarot deck created by Stuart P. Kaplan, drawings by Pamela Colman Smith, recolored by Mary Hanson-Roberts, published by U.S. Games Systems, Inc.Bountiful crops; hidden fortune or treasure; "preserving" - or maybe that's reserving; "snail's pace"; possibly snail mail; blind to good fortune.

Symbols

Pentacles, bird with hood, grapes, trees, vines, snail, hills, castle, trellis. It's the bird with the hood over its head that seems at-odds with the rest of this abundant and visually stunning image. Why would the bird require a hood? What is the figure wishing to keep the bird from seeing?

Colors

Gold, yellow, green, brown, red, purple, orange, peach, blue, tan, rust, white. Those luscious purple grapes steal the show, for me. Their tone feels like a nod to the heart chakra, and the spiritual "elements" associated with that chakra. That's interesting, given that the tone of the guard is very much grounded in earthly matters. Perhaps that's why those grapes are necessary; to provide balance.

What the Guide Says About the Nine of Pentacles

"A woman, with a bird upon her wrist, stands amidst a great abundance of grapevines in the garden of a great house."Divinatory Meanings: Prudence, safety, success, accomplishment, certitude, discernment. Reversed: Roguery, deception, voided project, bad faith."I'm unsure how "voided project" and "bad faith" came into the picture. The rest of it makes sense, to me.

What We Say About the Nine of Pentacles

Concord with great fortune and engagement with abundance.Obtainment of riches as through a family inheritance.Obtainment of riches as through wise investment.Correlation with the hoarding of riches.

Other Impressions

Secret stash, much like keeping cash under a mattress or in a coffee tin. Hidden in plain sight. Could also have to do with hidden talents or abilities. There's something androgynous about this figure that might speak to the unseen truth of a person's gender or sexual orientation.

 I Might Ask a Client...

"What hidden treasures are you keeping from others?""Do you feel as though you've been pigeon-holed to appear or be a certain way, when there's actually some ambiguity in play here?"What comes up for you around this card?
