Knight of Cups: Taking On Tarot Self-Study

Knight of Cups

My self-study of Tarot continues with the Knight of Cups. Or, as I just heard, "divine messenger."Knight of Cups: Taking On Tarot self-study of the Universal Waite Tarot deck, created by Stuart P. Kaplan, drawings by Pamela Colman Smith, recolored by Mary Hanson-Roberts, published by U.S. Games Systems, Inc.

First Impressions

Knight of Cups ~ Universal Waite Tarot deck, created by Stuart P. Kaplan, drawings by Pamela Colman Smith, recolored by Mary Hanson-Roberts, published by U.S. Games Systems, Inc.Fleet; fleet-footed; Mercury; mercurial; rigid; stoic; charismatic; deliverance; grounded and yet "airborne"; swimming upstream; spawning grounds; "My White Knight".https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=5VEjKFEMQ-o

Symbols

Cup, wings, horse, armor, fish, river, trees, hills.I'm taken by the motif on the knight's armor depicting fish upon a river. The sense of swimming upstream is strong here. I wonder how much work has been involved in this knight getting his message across. I wonder why he is needing to swim against the current... or if he is needing to.

Colors

Blue, white, gold, red, green, brown, gray. It's the blue - the dominant color on the card - that "sings" out. Blue can be the color of water and the color of sky. Blue is a cool color; a calming color. The blue here, perhaps especially as it's used on the wings of the helmet and the feet, has a celestial feel to it. Could this be a divine message from this messenger?

What the Guide Says About the Knight of Cups

"Graceful, not warlike, riding quietly, wearing a winged helmet, referring to the higher graces of the imagination which sometimes characterizes this card."Divinatory Meanings: Arrival, approach - sometimes that of a messenger, advances, proposition, demeanor, invitation, incitement. Reversed: Trickery, artifice, subtlety, swindling, duplicity, fraud."Well, the descriptive wording of the first sentence means more to me than the rest of it, minus the obvious part about a messenger, which feels like a colossal understatement. I just heard, "Messenger among messengers," meaning this messenger stands out and above all others. It feels like the true point of the card has been overlooked in the divinatory meanings text.

What We Say About the Knight of Cups

Consider the messenger's mode of dress, which is of softness and gracefulness. Consider its imagery, which speaks of flow, movement, perseverance, integrity. Consider implications of a message delivered from such a person in such a manner. How might such a message be received and integrated?A great opening for love.Strength of divine will.Fortitude in solitude and in companionship.Attraction of one to another as divinely created.

Other Impressions

I'm hearing, "Love. Love changes everything." Those are lyrics from a beautiful song, and I wonder what could be more divine than a message of such love?https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=XJk9N1Wh6is

 I Might Ask a Client...

"In what relationship will perseverance serve you?""What divine message have you recently received and how are you integrating it into your life?"What comes up for you around this card?
