King of Swords: Taking On Tarot Self-Study

King of Swords

My self-study of Tarot continues with the King of Swords. Or, as I just heard, "mind master."King of Swords: Taking On Tarot, a self-study of the Universal Waite Tarot deck created by Stuart P. Kaplan, drawings by Pamela Colman Smith, recolored by Mary Hanson-Roberts, published by U.S. Games Systems, Inc.

First Impressions

King of Swords: Taking On Tarot, a self-study of the Universal Waite Tarot deck created by Stuart P. Kaplan, drawings by Pamela Colman Smith, recolored by Mary Hanson-Roberts, published by U.S. Games Systems, Inc. Straightforward; linear; no-nonsense; guarded; plays close to the chest; quiet passion; "It Cuts Like a Knife".https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=6VZhSkREYBc

Symbols

Sword, crown, butterflies, angels, trees, grass, dirt, mountains, possible body of water just beyond trees. As with the Queen of Swords, it's the butterflies that stand out. In this instance, I have a feeling of immobility; as though the promise of those butterflies has been pinned to a specimen board. Very cold and unforgiving.

Colors

Black, white, gray, silver, gold, crimson, purple, orange, blue, green, yellow, tan, dark green, brown. It's the "cutting-edge" black and white of the throne and the clouds that provide many clues about this king. To say that he's a person who sees things only in black and white would be spot-on. There's no wiggle room here; no gray area.

What the Guide Says About the King of Swords

"He sits in judgment, holding the unsheathed sign of his suit."Divinatory Meanings: Whatsoever arises out of the idea of judgment and all its connections - power, command, authority, militant intelligence, law, offices of the crown, and so forth. Reversed: Cruelty, evil intentions, perversity, barbarity, breach of faith."I have an uncomfortable feeling that the description of this card is limited mostly due to the velociraptor-like intelligence of the energy depicted here. Bring to mind Anthony Hopkins in "Silence of the Lambs" and you've captured the feeling. (I can't wait to sage myself.)
