Five of Swords: Taking On Tarot Self-Study

Five of Swords

My self-study of Tarot continues with the Five of Swords. Or, as I just heard, "What's yours is mine."Five of Swords: Taking On Tarot self-study of the Universal Waite Tarot deck, created by Stuart P. Kaplan, artwork by Pamela Colman Smith, recolored by Mary Hanson-Roberts, published by U.S. Games Systems, Inc.

First Impressions

Five of Swords: Taking On Tarot self-study of the Universal Waite Tarot deck, created by Stuart P. Kaplan, drawings by Pamela Colman Smith, recolored by Mary Hanson-Roberts, published by U.S. Games Systems, Inc.Clandestine, steal away, subterfuge, sabotage, friendly fire, greedy, entitled, loss, arrogance.

Symbols

Swords, "sharp" clouds, water, sand, mountains. It's those "sharp" clouds that seem to amplify the tone of this card. Their "edginess" speaks to the potential for stab-in-the-back action - possibly from someone known to the victim.

Colors

Blue, gray, white, green, red, orange, gold, silver, brown, black. It's the steel gray of the clouds that stands out as the "power color" in this card, for me. It lends to the harshness of the action; the coldness and hardness of it.

What the Guide Says About the Five of Swords

"A disdainful man looks after two retreating and dejected figures. Their two swords lie upon the ground. He carries two others on his left shoulder, and a third sword is in his right hand, point to earth. He is the master in possession of the field."Divinatory Meanings: Degradation, destruction, reversal, infamy, dishonor, loss. Reversed: The same - burial and obsequies."Obsequies: funeral rites.Funeral rites? Burial? Perhaps the funeral rites for and burial of a broken relationship through the main figures dishonesty or entitlement.

What We Say About the Five of Swords

One person claims ownership and accolades over others.A person chooses self-satisfaction and self-gratification over others.A person of greed and want takes possessions of others, even as they are comrades.

Other Impressions

Laughing at the hardship and distress of others while creating that hardship and distress.Breaking trust of friends, family, colleagues for the purpose of personal gain.

 I Might Ask a Client...

"How might you be sabotaging or 'killing' relationships through misappropriation?""Who in your life may be using your goodwill for their personal gain?"What comes up for you around this card?
