Five of Pentacles: Taking On Tarot Self-Study

Five of Pentacles

My self-study of Tarot continues with the Five of Pentacles. Or, as I just heard, "Tough times."Five of Pentacles: Taking On Tarot, a self-study of the Universal Waite Tarot deck created by Stuart P. Kaplan, drawings by Pamela Colman Smith, recolored by Mary Hanson-Roberts, published by U.S. Games Systems, Inc.

First Impressions

Five of Pentacles: Taking On Tarot, a self-study of the Universal Waite Tarot deck created by Stuart P. Kaplan, drawings by Pamela Colman Smith, recolored by Mary Hanson-Roberts, published by U.S. Games Systems, Inc.Bleak; Have-Nots; misfortune; unfortunate; poverty;lack; homelessness; without the basic needs for living in comfort; "Poor, Unfortunate Souls".https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=xfkkMHieqcI

Symbols

Pentacles, stained-glass window, snow, crutches. The stained-glass window with its inset of pentacles feels like a slap in the face to the unfortunate souls in great misery without proper clothing. Its brightness seems to tease cruelly, indicating richness in stark opposition to their poverty.

Colors

Gold, black, red, blue, yellow, green, brown, gray, white, rust, mustard. The starkness of the black wall and the white snow seem to double-down on the stark reality the two figures face in the freezing cold.

What the Guide Says About the Five of Pentacles

"Two mendicants in a snowstorm pass a lighted casement."Divinatory Meanings: It foretells material trouble above all, whether in the form illustrated, that is, destitution, or otherwise. For some cartomancists, it is a card of love and lovers - wife, husband, friend, mistress - also concordance, affinities. These alternatives cannot be harmonized. Reversed: Disorder, chaos, ruin, discord, profligacy."Mendicants meaning: a beggar.Cartomancists meaning: one who practices cartomancy (divination through cards).Profligacy meaning: reckless extravagance or wastefulness in the use of resources.I'm in agreement with all except the bit about this card being "of love and lovers." I don't see or feel that, at all.

What We Say About the Five of Pentacles

True consequence of impoverishment, including being without home or food.False incrimination by financial misadventure.Poverty consciousness and its attributes.Openness to lack over abundance leading to a manifestation.

Other Impressions

Vow of poverty, as with a nun, etc.The dichotomy of those who "have it all" and those who have nothing at all."In the Bleak Midwinter".https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=U0aL9rKJPr4

 I Might Ask a Client...

"When you consider your financial and material position, what feelings or insights come up for you?""Could it be that it's time to ask for some financial support until you're able to be back on your feet?"What comes up for you around this card?
