Five of Pentacles
My self-study of Tarot continues with the Five of Pentacles. Or, as I just heard, “Tough times.”
Bleak; Have-Nots; misfortune; unfortunate; poverty;lack; homelessness; without the basic needs for living in comfort; “Poor, Unfortunate Souls”.
Pentacles, stained-glass window, snow, crutches.
The stained-glass window with its inset of pentacles feels like a slap in the face to the unfortunate souls in great misery without proper clothing. Its brightness seems to tease cruelly, indicating richness in stark opposition to their poverty.
Gold, black, red, blue, yellow, green, brown, gray, white, rust, mustard.
The starkness of the black wall and the white snow seem to double-down on the stark reality the two figures face in the freezing cold.
What the Guide Says About the Five of Pentacles
“Two mendicants in a snowstorm pass a lighted casement.
“Divinatory Meanings: It foretells material trouble above all, whether in the form illustrated, that is, destitution, or otherwise. For some cartomancists, it is a card of love and lovers – wife, husband, friend, mistress – also concordance, affinities. These alternatives cannot be harmonized. Reversed: Disorder, chaos, ruin, discord, profligacy.”
Mendicants meaning: a beggar.
Cartomancists meaning: one who practices cartomancy (divination through cards).
Profligacy meaning: reckless extravagance or wastefulness in the use of resources.
I’m in agreement with all except the bit about this card being “of love and lovers.” I don’t see or feel that, at all.
